Chicago in 1940 hummed even at midnight—streetcars clanged in the distance, laughter spilled from open tavern doors, and somewhere down the block a trumpet teased the night. But, for a moment, in that smoke-hazed room, I looked like a dream walking straight out of a silver-screen romance.
