The dimly lit room was steeped in smoky jazz and whispered conversations. A lone trumpet wailed, the sound drifting lazily above the murmur of clinking glasses and muted chatter. I stood just inside the doorway. My fingers traced the coarse edges of my houndstooth coat, the texture grounding me against the weight of waiting. 

The jazz club had its own pulsing rhythm, its heartbeat in time with the music. The golden light from the stained-glass lamps seemed to wax and wane, flickering shadows that danced across the scratched hardwood floors. The aroma of cigars mingled with the sweet perfume wafting from elegantly dressed patrons as the clock struck 9 PM.
