I remember the day Mr. X and I wandered the lanes behind the Taman Sari water castle in Java a former royal garden of the Sultan of Yogyakarta... a bathing area where the concubines would bathe while waiting for the sultan's choice... hmmm Mr. X liked that idea....
The necklace of Mandala is like the necklaces worn by the Kayan women of northern Thailand and Burma, yes, I say Burma, not Myanmar. The Kayan tribe has a custom where women that wear the "rings" around their necks to create an appearance of a long neck -- sometimes called giraffe women. Coils can weigh up to 25 pounds and depress the shoulders and chest.. they don't really make the neck longer... some women enjoy upholding this tradition, others feel pressured to endure the painful custom to make a living..... as an estimated 40,000 tourists pay $8-$16 to stop by the hill tribe villages in Thailand to gaze upon these women and take a photo. It all comes down to ethics; for me this arrangement makes me uncomfortable.
